Several weeks ago a young domestic short hair was brought into our hospital for boarding, but it was quickly evident that there was something off about this 15 month-old feline. One of our technicians noticed that her breathing was accelerated and asked one of the on-duty doctors to examine her. Closer inspection revealed that the kitten’s heartbeat was normal, with no sign of a cardiac murmur. However there was a slight abdominal push to her respiration that warranted concern. The owner gave permission to take radiographs.

Vets on alert for canine flu, but most dogs don’t need vaccine

August 31, 2009 - As the nation braces for what could be a rough flu season, dog owners wonder whether their households might get hit with a second threat: canine flu.
A much-publicized outbreak of dog flu in Northern Virginia last week — the latest in scores of outbreak clusters from Miami to Denver in the past five years — has put the spotlight on the highly contagious disease, which doesn’t infect humans.
Veterinary group to update all its Web sites
New sites will feature blogging by doctors and news and tips updated monthly.
Jul 31, 2009- Many veterinary practice Web sites are just static online brochures. And there’s nothing wrong with that, says Dr. Ted Sprinkle Jr., CEO and cofounder of Pet Partners, a privately owned group of more than 20 veterinary practices in at least nine states. “But it’s just the first step,” he says.
If the staff of High Peaks Animal Hospital marked the anniversary of its founding in dog years, John D. Cogar, D.V.M., would be celebrating 140 years serving pets and pet owners in the Tri-Lakes Region. But even when measured in human years, the hospital’s 20th anniversary is truly a moment to celebrate.

During a recent interview on Tampa Bay’s Channel 10 TV, Debra Draper, DVM and medical director at Cypress Creek Animal Hospital in Lutz, part of the Pet Partners family of hospitals, made a case for microchipping.
She said “It’s a permanent, identifiable marker as long as owners keep information up-to-date in the database and provide alternate contact numbers.”
